The Old Testament literally calls Jesus “MIGHTY GOD” (and people still argue)
How the Old Testament Keeps Screaming That Jesus Is YHWH in the Flesh
Seven centuries before Bethlehem, before Rome ruled the world, before the word “Christian” even existed, a Jewish prophet in Jerusalem stared into the future and saw one Person wearing two impossible names at the same time.
(And the Old Testament won’t let you pretend it didn’t say that.)
Let’s be honest for a second.
If you open your Bible to Isaiah 9:6 and read that a baby—born in a manger, no less—will be called “Mighty God,” your brain should short-circuit.
Because no faithful Jewish kid growing up in synagogue would ever dream of calling a human being “El Gibbor” — the personal war-title of YHWH Himself (see Isaiah 10:21, just one chapter later). Yet there it is in black and white, 700 years before Jesus took His first breath.
And Isaiah doesn’t stop there. He spends the rest of the book basically shouting:
“The God you’ve been praying to your whole life is going to show up in person — and we’re going to kill Him.”
And the smoking gun? Isaiah 53.
The Chapter Everyone Wants to Skip
You know how some churches skip the “hard” Old Testament readings? Isaiah 53 is the original forbidden chapter. Ancient synagogue schedules used to jump straight from Isaiah 52 to 54 just to avoid it. Medieval rabbis even called it “the chapter we do not read.”
And when you actually read it slowly, you understand why.
It reads like someone is standing at the foot of the cross with a slow-motion camera… seven centuries early (yes, 700 years give and take).
“He was pierced for our transgressions…
crushed for our iniquities…
the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him…
and by His wounds we are healed.”
Then comes the gut-punch in verse 6:
“All we like sheep have gone astray — each of us has turned to our own way — and the LORD (YHWH!) laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”
Stop.
YHWH Himself lays the sin of the world on this Servant.
That means:
- The Servant can’t be Israel.
- He can’t be Isaiah.
- He can’t be some random righteous man.
Only God can carry the sin of the world. And only God can have God lay that sin on Him.
Mind. Blown.
The Pronoun Glitch That Changes Everything
Then verse 10 gets even crazier:
“It was the LORD’s will to crush Him and cause Him to suffer…
After He has suffered, He will see His offspring and prolong His days.”
Hold up.
He dies… then prolongs His days?
He is crushed… then sees the results of His work and is satisfied?
That’s resurrection language—written 700 years before the tomb was empty.
“They Will Look on ME Whom They Have Pierced”
Fast-forward to Zechariah 12:10, where God doubles down:
“I will pour out a spirit of grace… and they will look on ME, the One they have pierced, and mourn for Him as for an only child.”
God speaks in the first person (“Me”), then switches to third person (“Him”).
The only way that sentence makes sense is if the God who is speaking is the same God who gets pierced.
John quotes it at the cross.
Revelation quotes it at the Second Coming.
Same pierced God—two appearances.
The Apostles Were Obsessed With This
Peter, on the day of Pentecost, basically preached Isaiah 53 and said,
“You killed the Author of life.”
Philip climbed into a chariot with an Ethiopian official, opened Isaiah 53, and said,
“Let me introduce you to Jesus.”
Paul said Isaiah was so bold that he predicted Gentiles would find God when Israel rejected Him.
The New Testament is basically one giant footnote that says:
“See? Told you so.”
So Here’s the Deal
The Old Testament doesn’t just predict Jesus.
It shouts that the coming Messiah is YHWH Himself in human skin.
- A Child born who is Mighty God (Isaiah 9)
- A Servant on whom YHWH lays the sin of the world (Isaiah 53)
- A Pierced One who is YHWH speaking in the first person (Zechariah 12)
You can debate pastors. You can unfollow Christian accounts.
But you can’t unfollow Isaiah.
For 2,700 years he’s been standing in the pages of the Jewish Scriptures yelling:
“Your God is coming in person.
He will let you kill Him.
He will rise again.
And everyone who looks to Him will be healed.”
So look. Right now.
The Mighty God who became a Man is alive, and He was pierced so you don’t have to be.
All you have to do is what Isaiah said in 45:22:
“Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth.
For I am God, and there is no other.”
He’s the only God who bleeds. And He did it for you.
Don’t look away.
In This Age of Chaos, Here Is the Only Message That Still Matters
We’re all in the same boat, and the Bible doesn’t sugar-coat it:
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
(Romans 3:23)
The payment for that sin isn’t just a bad day or a tough life — it’s death. Not only physical death, but eternal separation from the God who loves you.
“The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
(Romans 6:23)
“Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake — some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
(Daniel 12:2)
But here’s the good news the whole world needs to hear right now:
“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
(Romans 10:9)
That’s it. No catch. No earning it. Just believe and receive.
If You’re Ready to Turn From Sin and Trust Jesus Today
Pray this simple prayer out loud and mean it with all your heart:
Dear God,
I know I’m a sinner, and apart from You I deserve only judgment.
I believe Jesus is Your Son, the Mighty God who came to earth, lived the perfect life I couldn’t live, died on the cross for my sins, and rose again on the third day.
Right now I turn from my sin and put my trust in Him alone.
Jesus, please forgive me, save me, and be the Lord of my life.
Thank You for Your mercy and the free gift of eternal life.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you just prayed that and truly meant it — welcome to the family!
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.
The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
You’re forgiven. You’re loved. You’re His — forever.
Now tell somebody what Jesus just did for you. The adventure is just beginning!
